AT HOME with shiva osteen
PACIFIC HEIGHTS, SF, CA
An interview + tour of my childhood friend (and favorite cook)’s studio. Photography by me
SHORT BIO MAYBE?
“My name is Shiva, I live in San Francisco. My background is in hospitality and agriculture, and I spent the past five years making wine and farming. I currently run a kitchen program and a beverage program at two different companies. I like animals, dinner parties and creed karaoke. I dislike airplanes, stepping on a crumb, and opening my emails in the morning.”
WHAT MAKES A HOUSE FEEL LIKE A HOME TO YOU?
“I think when you can feel life and energy in the home. When you can cook a meal for someone, or have them over to hear about their day. Having that vibe and love in the house really permeates and makes it feel like a true home for me.”
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE OBJECTS IN YOUR SPACE?
“I’m so slow to collect things so I have a special connection with almost everything in my home. There are a few things I’ve moved with year after year and they always tend to be items with strong sentimental value. I have a framed photo of my dad and his cousin as kids holding caterpillars that I love.”
HOW DOES THIS SPACE MAKE YOU FEEL?
“This is my first house I’ve lived in alone, a dream of mine for years. The house has such good energy, I feel so safe and held. Even my cats loved it right away. It’s small, but I’m looking forward to being strategic with building a beautiful space. I feel really peaceful and confident here.”
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN HOUSE HUNTING?
“I gotta have wood floors. Real wood. Natural light is a must for me. I want to see a tree out my window. I’m such a brat when it comes to house hunting, I’ll admit it. I need character, something old, something built with intention. A little haunted by the people who lives there before (in a good way).”
